Times have changed. Now, you don’t have to live with spider or varicose veins.

The role of the veins in your legs is to transfer blood back up to your heart to be recirculated. Therefore, spider and varicose veins, swelling, and pain may be indicators that the health of your circulatory system is being compromised.

Significant medical advancements have been made in understanding and treating circulatory health.

Today, safe and non-surgical methods have been designed to cosmetically enhance and accommodate the patient with very little downtime.

TIPS

1. You can get rid of painful, unsightly varicose veins without major surgery.
The old painful stripping procedure is no longer necessary. Now, using a state of the art laser procedure, even the largest of varicose veins can be removed in the office without the need for hospitalization or anesthesia. Patients walk out of the office and can often return to work the next day.

2. If you have bulging varicose veins, you may be at a higher risk for blood clots or phlebitis when you travel. There are preventative measures you can take.
1. Try to book an isle seat when traveling by plane.
2. Get up and walk every half hour.
3. Flights over 2 hours: Wear strong support hose that come up to your knees.

3. The warning signs of a blood clot?
1) Swelling that affects one leg more than the other.
2) Pain in the back of the calf.
See a doctor immediately if you notice either of these symptoms.

4. Walk as much as possible.
Walking creates a pumping action in your foot and calf, which reduces pressure in the veins on the surface of your legs. Do not sit if you can walk, and do not stand if you can sit.

5. Stock up on support stockings.
These will compress the vein and help keep pain and inflammation in check. They provide varying degrees of pressure. Generally, the more severe the varicose vein, the more pressure that is required. Your doctor may have to write you a prescription for an even stronger pair. You should wear your stockings for all your walking hours, and take them off while you sleep.

6. Shed the extra pounds.
Being overweight does not cause varicose veins, but it can definitely aggravate them. For one thing, it puts extra pressure on your legs-just what strained veins don’t need. For another, it is usually a sign of inactivity, too much sitting or standing and not enough moving around.
